3/12/2010 11:21:29 PM I know a lot of people recommend using toothpaste even when kids are young. When should you stop using just water and start on toddler toothpaste? Is toddle toothpaste really worth the price, or would it just be better to use a small amount of adult toothpaste? |

Our dentist said as soon as the first teeth come in we should use the toddler toothpaste. We get ours from Target, I can't remember the name, but it has a bear on the front, it is pretty cheap. Don't use the adult toothpaste because it has to much flouride in it. My oldest use to brush her teeth all the time when she was little, she even used the kind for children (most still contain flouride), and it caused her teeth to have white spots. We were told this was flouride damage. |

Also, remember to only use a pea size amount. - aredfern 3/13/2010 12:51:42 AM | FlagI have this same kind of toothpaste. It is specially formulated just for children and there is no fluoride in it in case they eat the paste or accidentally swallow a little bit as they brush because they could be poisoned. Getting them in the habit of brushing their teeth works better for me since my son is mimicking my every move at this stage. He loves how we both use electric brushes and our toothpaste together, and he gets a real learning experience. - mirandayb 3/17/2010 4:02:08 PM | Flag |

I started using the toddler toothpaste when my son was about 12 months old. I use a very small amount (maybe even less than a pea size like the prior person said) and then make sure I rinse his mouth out with water after. The toddler toothpaste is pretty cheap, considering it lasts a long time. I would ask your pediatrician or pediatric dentist if you are concerned. Definitely don't use the pastes with flouride though. |

There is one a step below the toddler toothpaste that is for infants I believe. I've seen it at Wal-Mart. Use that or the toddler toothpaste until they are able to reliably spit. They can't have the flouride kinds until they are able to spit it out properly and know that they should spit it out -- swallowing the flouride toothpaste can upset their stomachs. |

My pedi said there is no need to ever use toddler tooth paste. She says there is no need for it and to wait and use regular toothpaste when he is old enough to know not to swallow it. |
