Asked by Almostsupermom {111} http://www.almostsupermom.wordpress.com 3/15/2010 9:42:41 PM My son is 1 and he says a few words. MAMA, DADA, DOG, and BYE. Is this normal? When did your toddler start saying words? |

They actually had the CDC come to my house to check my 4 year old when he was almost 2 because they didn't think his vocabulary was progressing normally. He is now 4 and knows as many words as he can. He really blossomed with this at about 2 1/2. Every child is different, my advice would be if this really concerns you, call the pediatrician, they can put your mind at ease. I also noticed that once he started daycare and playing with other kids, he really started talking a lot more too. |

I would not worry at 1. I have three boys 3 1/2, 21months and 11months. They have all progressed differently. My oldest has been the slowest but the other two have had him to learn form. Give it time then if you feel you need to have him evaluated just before three so if need be you can have him in speech therapy and ready for pre-school. But relax for now and enjoy those fun first try not to overthink things. |

My boy has been a talker since he was 1, my girl, is just starting to talk it up and she's almost 2. Kids are just different, some have a lot to say, some are quiet. |

I think you have brought up a very important point. People need to understand that some children are just quiet and do not feel the need to or want to talk as much as they are expected to. These children need to be handled with care to be sure that their growth is interrupted in anyway. My daughter was a super fast talker saying her first word right around the 7 month mark. On the other hand she didn’t start walking until she was almost 2 and a half, so I am sure the same logic could be applied to all children, some do it sooner, some do it later, and others do it different. It is just the way we are made. ;) - MomOfTwo 4/12/2010 8:24:22 PM | Flag |

I'm an adoptive mom of 6 and each of mine came to me thru foster care. I've learned that children develop differently and the milestones are relative. I have developmentally delayed children as well as special education children. Speech is developed from use. I've learned that in order for a child to comprehend and use a word they have to hear it over 1000 times first. That sounds like a lot but if you're talking to your child (like normal moms do) and showing them the world around them it doesn't take very long for those 1000 words to be spoken. If your child is older and still doesn't seem to be making progress then I'd worry. Progress (slow or fast) is what it's all about. |
