Best Age To Stop Breastfeeding

Some female co-workers and I recently debated on what the best age would be to stop breastfeeding.  One co-worker still breastfeeds her 3 year old son.  Another co-worker stopped when her daughter was less than 9 months old when teeth started to grow out and it was painful for her to continue breastfeeding.  I have a relative who continued breastfeeding until her child was 5 years old.  All three children appear to be developing normally.  What is the best age to stop breastfeeding?

To each is own I suppose, but I think a year is fabulous! I have a 5 1/2 month old and absolutely love nursing, however I think when they can walk its time to stop nursing.
Just curious -- why do you think it's time to stop meeting children's sucking needs the moment they start walking? Is an early walker less deserving of nurturing than a late walker?    -    LunaLovegood 3/20/2010 4:33:10 AM | Flag
Honestly I would stop nursing when they have teeth and begin to eat more solid foods. I would continue pumping for a while just to be sure they are getting the needed vitamins, but would stop that at a year when they can have cows milk.    -    Adensmama14 3/23/2010 3:45:25 AM | Flag

Personally I wouldn't be comfortable with it longer than 18 months.  However, I don't think there should be a strict limit on how long to breastfeed for.  I think it is up to the child and the mother.

I say to each his own. I nursed each child for a year until I felt my supply was running low. My son ended up biting me until I bled and I couldn't do it any longer, but we lasted a year together. As far as the 3 years and up...these children are no longer babies. They are toddlers... school age children. If a woman wants to nurse a school age child I would say in the privacy of her home. I am a strong advocate for nursing mothers who need to feed their babies because that is the main source of food, but when children can feed themselves, as 3 year olds and older can, it is time to do this in private. But nurse away as long as you want.
