I have a big issue with organization in my household. I seem to be setting my kids up for failure due to my unorganized way of living. I have always had a problem, but I feel so bad because my children can't find their shoes in the morning, lose their homework. I need tips on how to help my kids with their organizational skills, so they won't live their lives in chaos. Do you have any tips for children to help them get organized?

You are definitely not alone!! I would recommend that you start slow with your children. One idea is to have your children set aside the clothes (and shoes) they will be wearing for school the night before. That way they won't have to scramble and find their clothes and shoes. Another idea is to have your children put all their homework (to do and completed) in one place in their backpack, for example, a folder. Have them choose the type of folder design (e.g., plain color, design with favorite singer, athlete, etc.) so that they may be more inclined to use it. Have them put their homework in their folder the night before. If you have younger children in elementary school, most teachers have weekly reports or newsletters that go home with weekly packets. These usually include lists of upcoming tests and assignments. Keep that newsletter on your refrigerator where you and your children know and can easily find. That should help you both organize for school, especially planning for upcoming class assignments like science projects.

You mentioned that you have an unorganized way of living. One idea to help you organize is to use a calendar white board (with the dry erase markers). Write dates of upcoming tests and assignments for your children. Write down dates of your children's activities, such as sports, medical/dental appointments for everyone, and other important dates. Start slow when working to organize your life. If you don't use a personal calendar or organizer, I highly recommend it. You can also use a plain white board to write down your daily to do list. Cross of things that you have completed. Hope this helps! Good luck!
I agree. My mom was the queen of lists and organization. I hated it at the time, but now... I appreciate the lessons on self management and scheduling.    -    BBmama11 3/22/2010 2:43:42 AM | Flag

Hello, you are not the only one that has that problem. I also am unorganized, but when it gets to the point where your children have problems finding their shoes than you have more of a clutter problem than anything. I have been doing some spring cleaning here lately, doing away with things that are not needed or unnecessary. I was watching a show on T.V that was talking about the same thing. This lady said; if you have not used it within two months chances are youre not going to. I have probably donated a car load to Goodwill within the last couple of days.
That's a good test... have you used it within the last few months. Actually, I typically use the 12 month rule. If it has not been worn, played with or used within the last 12 months, it's heading for the Goodwill.    -    BBmama11 3/21/2010 6:25:46 PM | Flag
Storage bins and carts are great for organizing especially if you have small space.    -    Regina 3/22/2010 2:27:48 PM | Flag

I totally identify with that! I have been really trying very hard to put some kind of organizational system in place at our house. I have been doing a thorough cleaning of each room and throwing away things that are not used or needed. Then I make piles of things that I want kept together and find a place for them to go. With my three year old's room I had him help me decide where things should go and then it helps him to understand the process of how to put things away. Also, since he had a hand in deciding where things go, he has more interest (although not total interest lol) in putting things back where they go.
Thats a great idea. i organize my 4 year olds room she destroys it and it drives me crazy. I tell her all the time to put it back where it goes and then she gets over whelmed but she loves to help clean so i will use your idea and have her to hlp me organize it.    -    Regina 3/22/2010 2:33:32 PM | Flag

I would say try to make it a game for the kids. Kids are always eager to help mommy, just let them know how much they are helping you and maybe create a chores chart for them, and at the end of the week if they have keep their room clean and helped to clean up treat the to something special.
