3/22/2010 11:15:12 PM I have three sons with my oldest being 14, .........well, almost 15 years old. Since they were little I have told them that they will have time for girls and dating when they graduate from college. ha ha Now with a teenager, I am not completely opposed to dating, as long as both he and the girlfriend continue to have lives separate from each other: still doing things with friends, playing sports, goals for school and future that do not center around what the other one is doing. Does anyone have any suggestions on allowing my son to start dating? Best age? Guidelines? Parent involvement? |

I would say 16 is OK for one on one dating with a parent picking up and dropping off or staying around such as going to the movies with them and maybe seeing another movie. At 15 I might allow group dates but sometimes in a group date you see your friends doing things and you think its OK for you to. I think the maturity level is a huge factor and can they be trusted. Guys are very different than girls. Guys expect things girls are expected to do things sad that that is what it is but there is no use complaining about it that's the reality of it. You made a great point by saying as long as they are still involved in their school work and sports and have a schedule other than what their boyfriend or girlfriend is doing. Maybe limiting dates and dating till only the weekends that way the week is spent concentrating on school and home responsibilities and maybe weekend dating can be a reward for working hard all week. Teaching your sons about dating as a woman is a great way to teach them to respect girls and appreciate them for everything not just their looks or body. I think when a child can find real reasons to like a girl like she is very intelligent instead of shes cute than they can appreciate dating. |

At almost15 years of age I believe your son is ready to experience dating. Have him bring a girl date home to meet the family. Get to know who your son is seeing. Make sure your son is responsible and knows the consequences of certain behaviors. I agree that they should have separate lives and maybe only see each other on certain days. Picking up and dropping off your son and his date is a great way to monitor your sons activities. Dating is a normal function of life and has it's purpose. it is important that your son gets to experience dating now but at his young age he needs some boundaries set. Good luck! Hopefully he meets a nice girl your family will like. |

I was a teen mom and I don't think I should of been dating. I was much to immature to handle a real relationship. I think at 16 things like group dates and school dances are fine. Anything more serious than that will be out of the question. I don't think children should have a serious relationship until they are out of high school. |
