My daughter will be going to Kindergarten this year.  Is there anything you wish you knew or did before your child went to kindergarten.  What was a surprise to you?

Kindergarten is a new transition for your little one!  I wish I would have had some youngsters over or went to the parks for more socialization.  Interaction and separation, if introduced earlier, won't be so hard to adjust to.

I was surprised on the first day of school when another child consoled my fearful daughter. My own anxiety was eased, as I realized the capacity that children have to help one another in new situations.

That is a wonderful story. How long before your daughter wasn't fearful about going anymore?    -    abbamom123 3/28/2010 4:06:27 PM | Flag
It took about 2 weeks. The other child continued to mother her. They remained close friends thru school.    -    momov2 3/29/2010 6:00:40 PM | Flag
Helping them to be enthusiastic about school is the best way to start things off right.    -    ErinS 4/1/2010 10:10:44 AM | Flag

Has your child ever gone to daycare or preschool? Mine went to preschool most weekdays. I knew the owners well and my child really liked them, so it made sense! I also had a favorable preschool experience, so kindergarten was no different. Its still mostly play and games, but just learning to follow directions. I think it's exciting for kids to feel they have a duty or something to do.

My daughter was excited for it because I told her there would be other children her age to play with. If that's not a turn-on for some children, then tell them things that will appeal to them. If they like coloring, tell about the coloring projects or get them excited for learning to count to 100. My daughter also got a pretty dress to wear her first day which she was excited about!
