How to get rid of rotten milk smell in the car?

My son spilled almost an entire milk bottle in the car recently and it's starting to smell HORRIBLE!  The smell doesn't just smell like rotten milk but something way worse, like a dirty diaper.  We cleaned it with carpet cleaner (the spill was on the carpet on the floor) but the smell persists.  Now we are trying this odor-fighting canister that is supposed to banish smells like baking soda in the fridge.

Anybody have any tips or tricks.  We nearly need gas masks when driving our car!

Hi! This happened to us also when the children were small. The smell is horrific!   We first cleaned it with baking soda water. After the carpet dried we sprinkled kitty litter on the area and left for a few days. It absorbed the odor!   Good luck!
Good idea. We don't have a cat but we can borrow some from grandma. Thanks.    -    abbamom123 3/28/2010 3:53:55 PM | Flag
I agree, make a baking soda paste and leave it on overnight, then 'shampoo' the carpet with carpet cleaner and leave out to dry during the day. Good luck!    -    soratosjc 3/29/2010 10:38:31 AM | Flag
Good news! Using some carpet cleaner every day for a couple days, plus leaving the windows down and allowing everything to dry out did the trick. No more smell! Thank you!    -    abbamom123 3/31/2010 4:31:49 PM | Flag
Hi!! Had the same thing happen and we used the Rit brand of blood and protein remover. You can find it in the same isle where laundry products are sold picked mine up at Krogers I mixed with water in a bowl made a paste with it.Apply with soft toothbrush(So you don't pull up the fibers on the carpet)let dry.Once dry scrub again next breaking up the dry paste next vaccum with handi vac or vacuum..    -    damommy 10/26/2012 2:44:31 PM | Flag

I'm glad the smell is gone! To keep the car smelling good, you'll think I'm crazy, but put a cup of whole coffee beans in the car. It will get rid of so many stale smells and keep the milk smell from coming back.
Are you serious? Well, I'm going to have to give that a shot. Stay tuned...    -    abbamom123 4/3/2010 6:12:23 PM | Flag
