3/31/2010 8:43:13 PM My 11 year old has always done well in school.... until Middle School. He "hates" it. He cannot find anything that interests him. He shuts down the moment he feels academically challenged. He just doesn't care about school. While I don't need straight A's, I at least expect B's. I know he can do it, he just doesn't want to. I don't have any leverage to motivate. Any suggestions? |

He sounds like a classic case of learned helplessness. This is common in kids who are having trouble in school. What you have to find out is the barrier that is keeping him from functioning. Talk to his teachers, look for patterns in his behavior and talk to him especially. If he is having a problem in a particular subject, it could be signs of an underlying learning disability. These things can be helped, and it is not a bad thing. Also, find out if he's interested in a particular sport or activity, and support his participation. This will increase his confidence. Be patient and understanding, too. Don't berate him or threaten, because this will only cause him to pull back more. He'll come around with time. |

You can always go to to the counselor in the school. Normally in middle schools kids behavior changes because of their physical development. I believe he is having tough time in balancing the school & his physical changes. I hope that school counselor will help you. Good luck. |
