Wow. That's a tough one. First, don't say the pet fell asleep and never woke up...this will cause more night-time chaos than you can imagine! Second, don't just say the pet went to live somewhere else. Be honest. Say, John, I'm feeling really sad today. Scruffy's heart stopped beating and he died. He doesn't live here anymore. Now, consider your family belief system. Do you pelieve pets go to heaven? if so, explain that. Then, take your child's lead. Answer any and all questions they ask. If you are sad, don't be afraid to show it. Finally, if your child is really struggling with this, you might consider a book written especially to help children with the loss of a pet. Hope this helps in this difficult situation. |

I agree with not telling the child that the pet fell asleep. The child may be afraid to go to sleep. - yingling 4/14/2010 9:02:37 AM | Flag |

I agree with the post above, but small children don't need to be scared by too many details. Depending on your toddlers age, there are books that can help, here are some links. http://http://www.petloss.com/petlossbooklist.htm http://childrensbooks.about.com/od/themesubjectbooksby/tp/petdeath.htm This is a good thing to read, and has a good story included. |
