Is it possible to have fun on a budget?

The recession has caused much financial trouble for my little family over the last few years. Since my fiance and I have to work and go to school, our time with our precious baby is limited. What are some inexpensive day trips and home activities we could do?

Going for a walk, going to the nearest park, playing in the sandbox, playing in the leaves, planting flowers outdoors, visiting an elderly neighbor, go to the lake, go camping, go fishing, color, draw, make grocery shopping a way to play (baby gets to put items in basket..just watch he doesn't grab EVERYTHING), make a flower bouquet, play on the floor, create something, sing a song...ALL of these things are free.  At this age, these things will make MORE of an impact than going to Disneyland.  They won't remember Disneyland anyways.  However, all of these activities promote cognitive skills.  They learn about life around them, and you are making precious memories that money can't buy.

Local parks are great and you can also look in state and national parks in your area. Many of those parks have activities and events at reasonable prices. Check with your local park or your state parks and wildlife department to see what's available in your area. Some have barbecue facilities, picnic areas, lakes, fishing, hiking, biking, camping... so there's usually a lot you can do and most of them are free, but some require a park permit which are usually pretty inexpensive.

We've been doing alot of outside activities with the kids this summer. It's hard to find something all of them are interested in (6,4,3 & 18m0). Gardening has become one of their favorite activities. They've helped plant, weed, water, pick & of course eat the fruits of their labor. We live across from the town park & my husband has taken them over with gloves & garbage bags to pick up litter. The kids like helping make the park clean. Another fun thing is they look for frogs, turtles & ducks  in the canal that runs behind the park.  Local town parks & state parks are great places for picnics & learning adventures

We do movie night. The kids make a bed on the living room floor, we have a blockbuster that rents all movies for. 49¢ on Sundays and we pop popcorn
