What age do you think is too old to have a child?

Over the past 4 years I have experienced problems getting pregnant and am starting to think that I may be too old to have children. I am only 32 years old. I had my first child, who passed away during birth when I was 24, the successfully gave birth to my soon to be seven year old daughter when I was 25, and have tried ever since to get pregnant again with no luck. I have been checked by doctors for any problems I may have with my reproductive system and after extensive evaluations, they found nothing wrong with me. I am starting to think that I will never have another baby. Do you think it is possible that I could just be too old to have any more children?

I'm sorry you have had such a difficult time conceiving.  I would think that if you are indeed too old to have another baby, your doctors would have found that you had experienced early menopause.  I had all three of my children after the age of 35, so I don't always think there is a hard and fast rule for the right age to have children.  In my opinion you are still young, so don't give up.  Has your husband been checked for fertility issues?  I would definitely look into that too.

If you truly want another baby, try to just relax and let nature take its course.  This is the advice my doctor gave me when I first wanted to get pregnant and I really appreciated it.  She said to just do our thing and give it 8 months to see what happens before trying to see if there was a fertility problem.

Good luck!

speaking from experience, my mother had me at the age of 43, but keep in mind that times had changed, she was unable to adapt to the changing times and be more open minded which made me growing up harder. If you can adapt to changes of time and be open minded then early 40's is ok. if not then do not do it. that is just my opinion from experience
You are right, early 40s is ok. I had my doughter just few months before turning 40 and I think I did the best thing of my life.    -    cameciob 4/17/2010 9:42:49 PM | Flag

I definitely don't think you're too old. It just may be that it's not time yet or that you are only meant to have 1. Doctors don't have all the answers and maybe there is no answer to be found.

They that I think is women gets menopause because they should not have any more children at that age. So if you get menopause at 50 then your body is telling you, no more children. So until then, keep trying everything you can to get that little one.

When menopause starts that is your sign that you are too old.  But you should not worry what others will think or feel about you being pregnant.  If you are 40 or 50 and still able then go for it.  Children are a blessing and you should not let your age stop you from having one.  If you can take care of that child go for it.

Has your partner been checked as well? 32 is definitely not too old to conceive.

32 is not even close to being too old. Have you tried using a fertility calendar and charting? Has your partner been checked?

I had my baby boy at age 35 and i know lots of people who have had children older. What you will have to consider is the increased risk of having a special needs child. The closer to age 35 you are the higher the risk. I am hoping for another but only time will tell. Good luck.

I`m 37 and just had a baby boy last month. I also have an 18 month old and a teenager. I did choose to have all the advanced maternal age genetic testing for my last two babies. You qualify for them if you are going to be 35 at the time of delivery. It`s good to be prepared in case of complications with baby. :)

I had my last (for now anyway ;P), #8, at 39. I chart my temps and know I am still ovulating. Have you tried charting to see when/if you are ovulating? I have friends who are into their 40`s and still having babies :)
