4/12/2010 9:39:40 PM I am so on the fence about getting my daughter into gymnastics and cheerleading. I know it would be good for her as far as the aspects of physical activity but on the other hand I have seen numerous reports of how young girls are being injured sometimes paralyzed participating in such sports. My daughter is already 6 soon to be 7 years old and I know it is good to get children started early in sports. Is this a spot that I should just pass on or is it a good idea to get my daughter enrolled in cheerleading class? All opinions welcome. Thank you in advance! |

I think cheerleading and gymnastics are great sports for you daughter to enroll in. At her age they usually aren't doing the type of activities that cause the injuries I've seen in the reports that I've read (pyramids and tossing girls in the air or higher level gymnastics). As with any sport for kids of your daughters age, just make sure the coaches are letting her have fun and that she's enjoying herself. |

I agree that these sports are not dangerous at such an early age. Participating in them will give your daughter a chance to learn teamwork and to build her self-esteem. - SeptemberGray 4/17/2010 10:09:13 PM | Flag |

it is logical to worry about any sport but there is a risk that has a wound but if the foundations of teaching are good you will protegr ensenr the importance of the body. |

Perhaps if you asre worried that she may eventually take it to the next level with the Pyrimids and such, unless she has shown an interest in it, maybe another sport would be best this way you do not worry as much. I would suggest Basketball, it is a great cardio sport and she will not be thrown in the air :) |

| Bilqis Brand-Bryant Unfortunately, I do not have girls However, as a young girl I did those things and loved it. The physical training is good and by her having the background she may be able to do it once she gets into college so I say let them do it why wouldn`t you especially when is something positive Tuesday, May 10, 2011 | ||
| Melissa Miller I have four girls and one wants to start cheerleading this fall. Kids can get hurt walking down the street unfortunately. I think as parents, we just need to do our best to decide what are good activities for our kids as individuals. Tuesday, May 10, 2011 | ||
| Kim Smith My daughter will not be cheerleading unless they lengthen those skirts and stop dancing like pole dancers. Even the littles ones dance like that. It is sad. Tuesday, May 10, 2011 | ||
| Jaime Carson I coach a squad of girls 5 and younger. My daughter has been on the squad since she was 2. She loves it! Tuesday, May 10, 2011 | ||
| Stephanie Cobb Collingwood Probably depends on the squad/organization. I`d want to see more gymnastics and less pole dancing. Tuesday, May 10, 2011 | ||
| Tamara Mocny Kids are gonna get hurt no matter what sport their in, that`s just go`s along with playing sports. It won`t matter if she is in cheer or not later on down the line it may be another sport she will want to do and, she may or may not get injured. It`s not good to be to overly protective. | Shay Torres cheerleading is not what it use to be, u see 4yr olds dancing like strippers. i suggest gymnastics, i did it. u work hard, they teach u safety measures not to get hurt and have a dr/nurse right there during meets. cheerleading to me is more dangerous, they throw ur kid n expect others to catch them. at least with gymnastics its dicipline and structured. but what do i know, its UR kid Friday, May 13, 2011 | ||
| Mary McKenzie I would have no problem with cheerleading because I have yet to meet anyone who has participated who did not absolutely love it, and the serious injuries you fear are rare. She`s your baby, and you have to go with your gut, just keep the risks in perspective. Saturday, May 14, 2011 | ||
| Mary McKenzie Note: I have never seen cheerleaders pole dancing...ever! Lol Saturday, May 14, 2011 | ||
