Is the right right?

My daughter is getting ready to enter the second grade and she still uses both her right and left hands to write. We have tried to find ways to encourage her to become comfortable with one or the other; however, she still likes to switch off. I am afraid that her teachers are going to start penalizing her grades because of this. Anyone have any ideas on how I can help my daughter pick her writing hand, or should I just let her figure it out on her own terms?

Most children use both of their hands and switch off.  My daughter who will be 3 in 4 months uses one hand to eat and the other hand to write or color.  I am not worried about it and they will find their own way and terms of which hand will be dominant.

I dont think it is anything to worry about.  I eat only with my right hand and I write with my left.  I think its fine that she can use both hands.  Maybe as she gets older she will start using only one hand to write but if she doesn't its great she can use both.

I would let her figure it out. Our 4 yr old has a cross dominance issue and her pediatric neuromuscular neurologist said to let her choose which to write with, not to force it.Which hand they are depends on brain functioning. I might let her teacher know what you are doing and make sure he/she is on the same page.

Let her be ambidextrous... Both handed! It helps the brain be way more creative! Talk to the teachers they have no right to penalize her because she don`t use one hand or the other. The actual number of those who can use both is very slim! Its just great being a both hander! Tia 29

I still have this problem and I am 35 years old. I eat with both my left and right. Growing up it was never a problem with my teachers and one day I just grew out of it. She will figure it out on her own.

Let her figure it out on her own. Some children are ambidextrous which means they use both hands. My brother was left handed until first grade and now he mainly uses his right hand to write and eat however he uses his left hand to cut with scissors and throw a ball. Forcing her to choose a hand when she isn`t comfortable could confuse her because they say right hand people use the left side of their brain and left hand people use the right side of their brain. She may be one of the lucky ones wh

I agree. She will figure it out. I am 31 and I write with my right hand, but throw with my left hand!!

NEVER force handedness in a child, no matter how old. She will figure it out on her own.
