Chores for 12 year old

My step-daughter doesn't have many chores, but we are slowly trying to add them. She is only with us part time so we don't want to go too crazy, but we want her to learn to be responsible.

What chores do you have your 12 year old do? (or around that age)

How many?

12 is a great age for her to take some responsibility and get used to doing things for herself and not having to rely on you both all the time.  I think some good simple chores for her could be Setting the table, clearing the table, making her bed, vaccuming, feeding the animals if you have them, doing the dishes, putting her clothes in the washer.  Shes at a great age for a weekly allowence system and it would be a great insentive for her to want to do it. I have small toddlers, but they have a chart that they get stickers for to encourage them. They have to feed the cat, clean up there toys. It really helps them learn to pick up after themselves and they will carry those behaviors with them as they get older.
You could have her vaccum 1x a week, and chores she does everyday like making her bed, setting the table. They are simple little things but they get her involved! Hope that helps :)
Yes, that was very helpful! Thanks so much! I guess we are on the right track :)    -    HeavenlyMommy 4/18/2010 8:21:38 PM | Flag

My 9yr old puts her own laundry away, helps me with her younger sister, puts dirty dishes in dish washer, walks our little dog, and keeps her room clean.

My Step-children are treated just like my own. My kids range from 10-18, we have 6. Two of them are 13 and two are 11. They are all responsible for their own laundry, cleaning their own rooms and share the rest of the household chores like unloading, loading the dishwasher, washing pots and pans by hand, cleaning their bathroom, sweeping, mopping, dusting, vacuuming and picking up after themselves. Some may not agree, but that`s how we do it in our house. Yes, they complain at times, but we
