My daughter got the stomach flu that was going around in her school for a while. Though I knew about it, now that she got sick I'm totally unprepared. She is 6 and sometimes she doesn't make it to the bathroom to stay all clean. Also she feels miserable. Do you have any tips on dealing with this annoying bug?

Come up with a special treat that she will only get when she is sick.  When I was a little girl, I got to sleep on the couch when I was sick.  My grandma would also make jello water, which was jello mix stirred into two cups boiling water, then cooled.  It kept us hydrated when we didn't want to drink water.
Thanks for your suggestion. It sound like a very good idea. in fact I did run to the grocery store and got some freezes that she always wanted.    -    cameciob 4/21/2010 8:46:04 AM | Flag

my daughter just recently went through this stomach bug, we had her sleep on the couch with a little garbage pail right next to her because there is no way she would make it to the bathroom , especially with her throwing up every 30 minutes, we did some ginger ale, and some warm tea and the ginger ale seemed to help her the most with a few bites of some saltines here and there. Hope she feels better!
We had an ice cream bucket to throw up in. Made things much easier, not having to get up.    -    Mom2Boys 4/19/2010 4:06:27 PM | Flag
Thanks for your respons. She is over it now. Next time (which I hope won't be soon) I'll try ginger ale too.    -    cameciob 4/21/2010 9:59:23 AM | Flag

My daughter has had this about 3 times. You just have to wait it out. I put towels under her head and a small trashcan next to the bed with a bag in it because she only gets to the toilet if she is already in the bathroom. If she can wear them, some Pampers underjams or Huggies Goodnites will help if she is having trouble from both ends. Once my daughter was going from both ends simultaneously, so I had to pick which mess I was going to clean up. Once it runs through, some Pedialyte drinks

Oh, and I know it sounds obvious but I forgot. Make sure to either wear gloves if you have them or wash your hands immediately after doing anything for her. Once I did not, just got so involved in cleaning up. Guess who got it next. Yep. Hope she feels better soon.

We use a puke bowl for our kids.

I agree with Sonya, you just have to wait it out. But things that might help, lots of fluids, rest, baths, motrin/ibuprofen if needed for aches and fever, the BRAT diet (bananas, rice, apple sauce, toast). When my son is sick, we make him a bed in the living room, put a towel under his head, a trash can right by him, and let him watch movies.
