Are sugar-free treats safe for kids?

We try to watch the number of sugary snacks and drinks our 6-year-old son eats.  It seems there are sugar-free alternatives for just about everything out there.  I always notice that his behavior changes after eating something with Splenda in it.  Do you think Splenda is a safe alternative to sugar?

I think it is safe.  I really looked into artificial sweeteners when I was pregnant, and all of the information I found pointed to them being safe.  What do you mean, his behavior changes?
I liken it to roid rage...he gets defiant, argumentative and uncontrollable. He had been drinking a juice with Splenda in it and had these reactions on a daily basis; once we removed the juice from his diet, the fits stopped within a day.    -    kristir33 4/19/2010 8:03:25 PM | Flag
No I do not think the artificial sweeteners are safe for anyone especially not for children when they are growing. You might want to do your own research that is not paid for by the company selling the product.    -    smileandlearn 4/20/2010 12:07:01 AM | Flag

NO!!! Sugar free alternatives can cause a higher risk of diabetes in children and adults. Your pancreas expects a large amount of sugar and when it doesn`t show up, your body is left with very high levels of insulin to reabsorb, which can cause serious weight gain. Its better to go with real sugar in small quantities...

I personally wouldn`t give my child any type of sugar alternative. Real sugar isn`t bad in small quantities.... http://www.splendaexposed.com/

No, I would say it`s not a good/safe alternative to sugar. When I have splenda I get headaches.

I will my kids with splena some, but will give protein like peanut butter and crackers, which will meet dietary protein intake. My kids, 6, 6, and 5 ( the youngest) want nothing but sugar crap... And I stopped it, made them eat more fruits instead. Aspirtame(sp) and all that can cause dehydration. Splenda doesn`t do it to me, but the others will.

it doesn`t matter splenda is nasty so y bother? better off w/ unsweet 4 SURE. read French Women for all Seasons, the sequel to French women Don`t get Fat, she talks about weaning off of sweet things altogether and how artificial sweetners don`t wean u off sugar but perpetuate it.
