Saving umbilical cord questions?

I am pregnant with my first child and i read that saving the umbilical cord is important because of the stem cells that are in the blood.  It is suppose to help treat certain diseases.  My question is How many of you ladies actually saved your child's umbilical cord? Did you need it later in the future? Would you recommend me doing it?  I am thinking about it because I want to do whatever it takes to protect my child's future.

I think it is very wise to think about saving your baby's cord blood. Unfortunately, I wasn't as informed as you are so I did not saved it. Later I regretted as I have a very sick sister who may have benefit from it. However, there some things you need to know (and maybe you do already): first, there is a fee for saving it, second, there are some small risks involved, third, you could donate it for a bank or for researches.
My personal opinion is that the umbilical cord blood could be very useful in the future for you and your family or for others (if you decide to donate it).

The research shows that umbilical cord blood from this child has almost no way of helping that same child in case of an illness, but the cord blood can possibly (and with much better %) help another child if you had one. I did not bank mine because I am done with just one child, bu I did donate my cord blood to LifeShare.

I wanted to bank our cord blood, but we couldn`t afford it I hate to say. And our midwife at the time said unless you have a family history of leukemia/certain other illnesses, you don`t need to do that.

I didn`t with my first (4 years) because my doctor said it wasn`t worth the money yet. She said that they need to have one general blood bank instead of so many different ones because you couldn`t use it for the same child. As the years have passed, the banks have grown & gotten better at sharing the cord blood. It`s still to expensive for me, but I like where it`s all headed.
