4/20/2010 2:46:15 PM Is breastfeeding painful? I was told that it hurts the first few weeks even if your baby latches on properly. I know it is the best thing for the baby but I am a little afraid. What if I have trouble and its very painful or if the baby does not get enough milk? What has been everyones experience? I am overreacting? |

No your not overreacting, I was terrified with my first daughter to breastfeed and what if I couldnt do it. It is painful at times, it pulls your uterus and such back into place and I got bad cramping while I fed and your nipples do get sore and crack sometimes. They make creams for that though. The nurses will work with you at the hospital and show you what you need to do, they spent a lot of time with me when i needed it, it is overwhelming in the very beginning but when you get used to it, its very easy. Also using a warm compress on your breast before or during will help the milk flow better! That helped me a lot. ANd if for some reason you just cant do it or the baby REALLY wont take to it ( my first wouldnt no matter what) you can always get a breast pump and pump your bottles! |

| Sherri Hare yes it does hurt. i nursed my first, he did great. My seond was born early and we just could not get him to latch, and my milk would not come in. So there is a chance that nursing mightn ot occur, but you have to remember that your baby still loves you, he will not think differently of you, and not to be hard on yourself. IT is hard to do, hard not to do, and hard in between. Good luck! Thursday, November 18, 2010 | ||

| Leah Duffin Yes it hurts at first but they sell breast shields that help a lot then after the first month its like second nature Thursday, November 18, 2010 | ||
| Janet Nichols My nipples were kindof uncomfortable for a day or two...but if there is real pain than the baby isn`t latching on correctly. Once you both get the hang of things there should be no pain. Thursday, November 18, 2010 | ||
| Angela Brozek Ziemer Besides from the initial nipple soreness in the first few weeks, breastfeeding should not hurt. Latching can be learned by mom and baby. If you wonder if baby is getting enough all you need to do is check for a wet diaper. I have 3 children, and breast feeding is something that is definitely a learned skill, but it is a wonderful connection between Mom and baby that bonds like nothing else I have experienced. That said, if it doesn`t work for you no baby didn`t make it because of formula. Y Thursday, November 18, 2010 | ||
| Amy Buteau My twins were born at 24 weeks - so I pumped, and pumped, and pumped for over 4 months. They weren`t able to do latch because of all the breathing equipment that was needed. Perhaps because of them coming early, I never got a good supply. But what did help was Fenugreek, a perfectly natural herbal supplement, which has the added benefit of making everything you excrete smell like maple syrup. Seriously! After my kids finally started coming home, the stress of all the oxygen equipment, mon Thursday, November 18, 2010 | ||
| Jeannine Scionti-Stahl That is why they make Lanisoh it helps a little it can just get dry and cracked if you don`t moisturize with the stuffl. Good Luck. Thursday, November 18, 2010 | ||
| Denise Penland didnt hurt me. i have 9 month old twins and 8 yr old twins. Thursday, November 18, 2010 | ||
| Wendy Ortega Yes it hurt. My nipples hurt for the first month. Especially when she would first latch on. That first intial suck was a doozy! But! It got better as time went on. Nursing doesn`t come easy for most but if you do the work, you should be fine! It took me having my third baby to really get it down. My little girl is now 5 months and I am still nursing. Its a breeze now. Good luck!! Thursday, November 18, 2010 | ||
| Kelly Bowen Jenkinson I nursed my oldest son till he was 22 months old! My youngest is now 7 months old and I am still nursing him. It has never hurt me at all. I was always told if it hurts then the baby isn`t latching on correctly. You will know if the baby is getting enough milk by checking for wet diapers and you can always take them in for a weight check if you are concerned! There are also nurses available to help with breastfeeding if you have any questions or concerns! Also be aware that it is OK to NOT Thursday, November 18, 2010 | ||
| Magaly Sanchez I nursed for one week. Baby seemed to latch on fine but I was a little sore. I stopped because I needed to see how much my son was eating. I know they stop when they`ve had enough, but that didn`t help put my mind at ease. I struggled with the decision but I had to find peace within myself. My son drank his formula till he was one. He`s now 16 months old and we are super bonded. So if that`s another concern of yours, don`t worry. You will share a very special and unique bond with your child n Thursday, November 18, 2010 | ||
| Susan Auten I have breast feed all four of my children and have never found it painful (except for the contractions that continue for a couple of days but that was only with #3 and #4). Lansinoh is also great for chapstick if you are in a pinch! Thursday, November 18, 2010 | ||
| Archangela Graffius I have 2 kids. I remember the first time hurt, not the 2nd time. I never had enough milk to satisfy them. I tried everything! Dont feel bad if you have to give some formula and know that the child will be attached to you almost always! I would also suggest getting a good breast pump. I rented one from a medical supply place and my insurance covered the cost! Good luck and you can do it. Thursday, November 18, 2010 | ||
| Megan Parry I tried and my kids wouldn`t latch on. So I pumped and gave them milk in a bottle. I also had the added benefits of being able to see how much they drank and being able to store what they couldn`t drink. Friday, November 19, 2010 | ||
