4/21/2010 1:19:05 AM Football is huge in our hometown and I absolutely love the game! So many other mother's that I talk to about have a heart attack when I tell them I can't wait for my youngest to be able to play tackle football; they think soccer is a much safer sport. I am all for letting boys be boys and as long as they play the game safely, I support them playing football. Would you encourage your son to play football or urge him to play a "safer" sport? |

I fully understand where you are coming from. I have been down this same road, infact I am still on it. I guess I would first ask your sons age? My son did not start with football. He started early on around the age of 9 or so with soccer. At that time he really had no interest in football. Soccer is a great first sport. When my son reached the 8th grade and started to show a liking for football, my family all jumped on me for allowing him to play. Of course I was nervous. It can be a dangerous sport. My son was on the thin side and they all owrried he would get hurt. Thankfully he will be a senior in high school next year and he has played since his freshman year with no real injury. After he found that he wanted to play, he began really working out and putting on some good weight and I think that has helped his ability to stay afloat out there. If your son really wants to play then I think it should be encouraged. As a mother there is nothing that anyone can say to relieve your fears of them being on the field. It is such a great sport to be involved in. |

I agree that if your son really wants to play, it should be encouraged. It's important for children to know that their parents are supportive of their interests and hobbies, and if you're there and involved, I think your fears will be eased. - Alexis 4/21/2010 8:06:48 PM | Flag |

I guess you might say I'm old school. I firmly believe that boys will be boys, and should be boys! Safety first of course, and I think special attention should be paid to a good sport attitude. Foul play is a good way to get hurt during contact sports! But otherwise, let them play. |

| Christina Smoorenburg don`t know the stats...but soccer has a HUGE amount of major knee injuries. I have three cousins that all had either ACL or MCL surgery before they were 16. There is an argument for concussions in football too though. I say, you are the parent so it is your decision and shame on those who fault you for it. I intend to have my little girl learn how to kick field goals! She can then play both the safer sport and football LOL! Monday, November 01, 2010 | ||
