4/21/2010 7:39:29 PM My child is nine years old and very responsible. He loves to help me cook and has been asking to cook for himself for the past couple of months. I am not sure he is old enough to use cooking appliances, such as the oven, stovetop or microwave and have told him as much. He does make his own cold foods though. I would like to give him a guideline age that is old enough to cook on their own using kitchen appliances. How old do you think a child should be to use the appliances of the kitchen without supervision? |

When I first used a stove I was probably over 12...but kids, this days, are smarter. You are doing a great job. I think all depends on how much you trust your son. My opinion is that he is too young. Children this age do not have much experience about hot and cold, different degrees of heat or cooking basics like hot water, how heavy is a pot, that the oil can 'jump' from a skillet and so on. But I think he has the right age for the microwaves experience. My daughter is only allowed to stir in the pot few times, she can also add salt and pepper or other things that don't make a splash. |

I would definitely say it all depends on the individual child! When I was barely 10, I ran a dog-biscuit baking business all on my own independent of my mother's help. I had watched her long enough int he kitchen to know what to touch and what not to touch, how to turn the oven on and off responsibly and how to put things in and take things out of the oven safely. My youngest sister is now barely 13 and nothing short of a pro in the kitchen. She is an expert when it comes to homemade bread from scratch because of the extensive amount of time spent cooking and baking from the time she was between 7 and 8 years old. Lessons started with my Mother and I of course, and she gradually grew less and less dependent on us. I would not hesitate to say she is now a better cook than I am! Common sense applies here . . . and trust your gut! |

| Danelle Smith The rule in my house until I was 12 was : If it cooks in the microwave, you can make it. That is the age when they can take courses in school to learn cooking and such. If your child is mature enough to know how to be safe and if your gonna be in the house, then why not? Some kids are ready for certain responsibilities before others Wednesday, October 27, 2010 | ||

| Tamara Mocny My son uses the microwave and also makes his own sandwiches, he even uses the toaster. I think that you can start him out on something simple like that. Wednesday, October 27, 2010 | ||
