We have a cabin up north. The cabin is located on an island on one of the many lakes in northern Minnesota. There is no electricity, no gas, no transportation. We have a boat, a well and many lamps. We also have poison ivy on some spots (we tried to kill it but didin't work). I have studied the plant but, to be honest, I cannot tell it apart from others that look the same. I am afraid that my daughter, sooner or later, is going to touch the plant. How should I treat her. A doctor may be hours away.

Good question.  Also, it's not just poison ivy you have to worry about.  There's alos poison oak and poison sumac.  (Yikes, lots of poison out there, I know.)

As far as identifying poison ivy and oak: Poison ivy and poison oak both have 3 leaflets per stem. Here is an easy way to remember that:

 Leaflets three, let them be.

Treatment:

  • Get into a cold shower, place the area of the rash into the cold water, or splash cold water all over it. Use lots of soap when you take the shower.
  • To relieve the itching, take an OTC antihistamine, like Benadryl. Follow the directions carefully.
  • Wash all of the exposed clothes  with very hot water and strong, soapy detergent.  (Put on rubber hand gloves when you perform these steps.)
  • Keep your hands away from your face, eyes and mouth.
  • Do not rub or scratch the rash.
  • Apply any of these to the skin rash:
Calamine (not Caladryl) lotion; OTC hydrocortisone cream. Follow the instructions on the label!
  • A paste of 3 teaspoons of baking soda and 1 teaspoon of water.
  • Take baths with warm to lukewarm water. Add an OTC product called Aveeno colloidal oatmeal.

Good luck!

thank you. I printed to have it handy.    -    cameciob 4/28/2010 11:10:35 AM | Flag

I have several friends that end up in the hospital with this so I found something that has helped.  It is by Natra Bio and called Poison Oak/Poison relief and is a natural homeopathic Medicine. I has helped them. You might check it out and see if it helps.  also hopefully you are not allergic.
I like natural. I'll check it out for sure. Thank you.    -    cameciob 4/28/2010 12:13:11 PM | Flag
I haven't been able to find your natra bio. Is it available online, maybe?    -    abbamom123 5/15/2010 5:39:45 PM | Flag
