![]() | hermit crabs were good first pets for my grandsons. They learned they needed to remember to feed them and could watch them without the mess or so much time involved. |

I think a cute, little beta fish would be a great first pet. |

I believe a puppy to grow with your child, it will teach them how to care for something and love it, as well as have a friend. - lighthousemt 5/31/2010 9:50:22 PM | Flag |

I agree that a fish might be a good idea, but it's also good to get them something they can touch and pet so you can teach them how to be gentle. Maybe a little bunny. It's also good because you can teach them how to take care of the pet. |

| Deanna Smith-Powers How about a guinea pig? My son has one and has learned a lot about taking care of a pet. :) Wednesday, August 25, 2010 | ||

| Jessica Moore I started my son out with a fish. It`s a low maintenance pet, and your daughter can be taught responsibility by feeding and spending time with it everyday. Inevitably, fish do die fairly quick. But this will give you an opportunity to teach her about life and death as well. Wednesday, August 25, 2010 | ||
| Shikha Sethi ? I got my 3 yr old girl a fish & she is too happy with it..although she was always asking for a dog :-) Wednesday, August 25, 2010 | ||
| Archangela Graffius We have a bird. My daughter will be 4 in a few weeks. She helps me change the food and water daily and talks to the bird daily. Plus, its much more fun than a fish. lol! Wednesday, August 25, 2010 | ||

| Stacey Kitchen I heard guinea pigs are the best b/c they don`t bite and have no memory from the last time your kid sqeezed them too hard. They are a little difficult to catch but once you have them they are pretty relaxed. Wednesday, August 25, 2010 | ||
| Dorene Darabaris I agree w/ Jessica Moore...a goldfish is a very good pet. not a lot of work but just enough for a 4 year old. good luck Thursday, August 26, 2010 | ||
| Morgan Njexoticdiva From experience with MANY animals - 4 year olds do best with fish - particularly a Beta. They are colorful very pretty fish that are extremely low maintenance. You don`t even need a filter, the one I`ve had the past 4 years is in a plastic see through Dunkin` Donuts cup, I feed it once a day and add fresh water every other day for air etc, and change the water every week or whenever it gets cloudy. They do have small beta tanks with filters too, but I was just saying for reference - they are the Thursday, August 26, 2010 | ||
| Morgan Njexoticdiva Just a note to all - if it has a mouth it Can bite. Not all animals are the same, but I`ve been bitten by everything from hamsters, to guinea pigs, to birds, to dogs/cats, to snakes, even fish. Just depends on the individual animals temperament. I used to be a handler, and seen it all. Thursday, August 26, 2010 | ||
| Raya Sunshine I think at four, I`ll just perfect her responsibility as far as herself, her behavior and hygiene. Responsibility as far as pets, can wait. Thursday, September 02, 2010 | ||
