Controling TV time.

My daughter is four and likes all the silly cartoons on Nick and Disney.  How much TV is too much? I don't want her to become a couch potato so I try to encourage her to play outside or color.

My son is almost two and he watches tv right when he wakes up, during the day only when I'm trying to get something done real quick but I need him distracted, and then right before bed when he's drinking his milk.

I also make sure we play outside, he plays with toys independently and with me, and colors. We also go on walks with the stroller or on foot when I want it to be a short walk. I think as long as tv isn't the only activity, then you're good.

I think the fact you're concerned means you're on the right track!

My rule of thumb is for every hour of tv, an hour of non-tv.  There are only so many hours in between school, naps and bedtime that if you break it down like that, there is sure to be a good healthy balance to be found.

The more tv a child watches the more things they are going to be told they need to buy.  I think one of the worst things about tv is the constant commercial being given.  This is especially true with so called children shows. A good example of this is the Sesame Street program.  Look at all the Big Bird toys, Ernie and such to buy. I find once the Tv goes on for the day the more requests there are for more tv.  Blocks and such are good to entertain a child without so much supervision.

I think it is harder than it used to be since many of us have multiple tv`s and there are so many shows focused on young children. I usually let my 2-year-old watch one or two shows in the morning which is about 30-45 mnutes. Then one show in the evening, usually while I`m making dinner. I read a recommendation of no more than 2 hours. Time adds up quickly. One bad habit that we have is having the tv on all of the time. (really MY bad habit) I like the noise. One good thing is that my son i

three hours a day while I clean, check e-mail, etc.... after that, it`s reading time, teaching time (I`m teaching my 4 yr old to read and perfect her handwriting as far as writing her name), and we hit the road and go places, like the ice-cream shop or to lunch (just me and them) or to the library or public park.
