High chair to the kitchen table

My son is 20 months old and sometimes he screams when we put him in the high chair. I try to put him at the kitchen table but he makes such a mess and doesn't eat as much. He also touches everything with his dirty hands, including the wall. Is this because it's new to him? It's bad enough cleaning up the high chair, but at least the mess is mostly on the tray when he's in the high chair.

Is he too young to sit at the table or should I just let him sit at the table and try to control the mess until he gets used to it?

I think I started sitting my daughter with us at the table around 2.  It is very messy, but she hated the high chair too.  We got her a booster type chair and put a towel down on the floor.  I don't think he is too young.  I just think messy will happen for awhile.  He'll grow out of it!
We put him in the booster seat at our kitchen table tonight and it went really well! He even ate off his own plastic plate and used a fork! It was actually less messy than the high chair. He only dropped 4 pieces of corn and there was no tray to clean up.Thanks for the help :)    -    HeavenlyMommy 5/19/2010 9:03:49 PM | Flag

Sitting in a booster at home makes it easier when you're out at a restaurant too.  My parents used to put sheets under us kids, btw.
Good idea!    -    HeavenlyMommy 5/20/2010 12:08:49 AM | Flag

I think your son is adjusting to becoming more part of the family and less of the baby. It`s kind of like getting into VIP. He used to have to sit in a highchair while the rest of the family happily ate at the table. Now that he`s been included, he definitely doesn`t want to go back to that highchair. But the newness of table is probably whats causing his lack of appetite. I would try sitting him down in his highchair to eat about 10 minutes before the rest of the family sits. This will gi

Try a booster seat. You attach it to the chair & you can either use the tray it comes with or he can eat @ the table. My sister in~law did this for my nephew who is almost 21 months & he loves it! He feels like a big boy & gets to eat with the rest of the family. Plus it folds up nice & small & you can put it in your trunk & use it when you go out to eat or anywhere else for that matter. Good luck :)
