Gross question alert -- if my pet eats my child's poo, is that worthy of going to the vet?

I'm sorry if this question is too gross for this site.  And I know this is a mom not a pet site, but this really happened...

Long story short, in an effort to teach our 20-month-old son to go on the "big boy potty," we sat him down on the plastic seat where usually he just does a few squirts of No. 1.  But today he decided to really go for it and -- surprise, surprise -- out came some No. 2.  We weren't expecting this (thought I don't know why) and didn't adequately restrain the family dog beforehand.  Well, Fido (not her real name) comes along and eats two little "links" of poo.  We couldn't believe she would do that.  It was like they were candy bars.

DISGUSTING!!

After all the wretching , vomiting and gnasing of teeth  was done (ours not the dog's), we had a good laugh.  But I'm wondering if this type of thing is harmeful for a dog?  Meanwhile, some doggie breath mints are on the shopping list!

No need to take your pet to the vet, there must have been something in there the pet was lacking, if in 24 hours the pet is feeling the same, he/she will be fine...

one of our dogs used to eat his own poop....nasty, but that's what they do. no need to worry!    -    Marisa Scott 9/7/2010 9:58:58 PM | Flag

I`d watch the dog for anything out of the ordinary. (not that eating poop is normal per se :) ) or call the vet if it`ll put your mind at ease. Coprophagia (sp?) Is what its called.

Dogs eat poop. Nothing to worry about. They`re animals and their stomachs are different.

Well, think about it...animals will eat anything-even their own poo. It is gross but as long as it doesn`t always happen and the dog didn`t get sick then it should be ok. If you are really concerned, call the vet and ask.

20 months - SERIOUSLY? I`m 403 months old... and don`t worry about your dog. I`ve seen dogs eat everything from poop, homework - literally with pix to prove it, wires, phones, drywall, and pretty much anything else they can swallow - or sometimes can`t. If it gets sick, then take it to the vet. No sense in wasting money on a vet bill for your dog being as retarded as the rest of the species.

oh, and I don`t mean by the dog puking at the time - you`ll know if it gets sick.

ugh, 20 months is how the pediatricians would say it and less wordy then having to say over a year and a half, but under two...lay off, lol. As for your pet eating poo, yes that`s gross, but I wouldn`t worry about it if it`s not a normal diet for him/her.
