You can read potty training books, use the old cheerio in the potty trick or point out how hot and uncomfortable a diaper is and the fact that big boys use a potty not a diaper. My first son potty trained just before 2 when it was too hot for a diaper. My youngest boy was nearly 3 before he used a potty. He was perfectly comfortable in his diaper and scared of the potty. We encouraged him to pee outside off the deck (we live in the country) until he was ready to tackle the bathroom!

It's all about getting your kids interested and making them think that going in the big potty is a game. Try making a sticker chart and rewarding them for a whole week of using the big potty, or let them wave goodbye to their pee-pee and flush the toilet themselves.

I read that if you start emptying poopy diapers in the toilet to show them wear poop is supposed to go it helps....
They of course need to watch....lol    -    katygooser 3/8/2010 11:41:35 PM | Flag

You have to somehow make the task fun.  Offer the child a reward after he uses the potty so he will want to use it more often.
I dont know if it needs to be fun or not. My pediatrician told me that if I force my son to train to early he wouldnt do it and it would just be a big hassle. So when he was ready which was a week after his 3rd bday it took less than 2wks to completely train him.    -    candicebrown 4/12/2010 1:39:48 PM | Flag

In the summer we took off my son's diaper and let him go nude in our fenced yard. That way he felt the sensation of pee coming. We used stickers and small rewards for several days of using the potty. Don't be surprised if your son masters #1 but refuses for #2. They will when they are ready. Using the big boy concept helped for us, and also peer pressure as some of the other kids in the pre school program were practicing using the potty. We had some books about using the potty specifically for boys that came with a doll for him to use, and we made a game about having his toys have to use the potty too.

Can`t wait for my son to finally get it. He will pee in the potty but refuses to go number 2 in the potty.

Winnie: we went through the same thing. Then all of a sudden it was like a switch was thrown and he wanted to try for #2 as well. It was like he was totally freaked out or scared about #2 in the potty. Weird. I know how frustrating it can be- hang in there!

I agree with my two boys when they were ready they got trained I tried at 2 1/2 with both and at 3 it`s like a switch went off and they went on the potty with no problem.

boys are harder to potty train I think. My lilltle one was almost 3 before he was ready. Put Cheerio`s in the toilet and have hime act like they are targets.

I`ve been trying with my 2 1/2 yr old boy. I`ve been told to put them in regular underwear, but my son will just watch himself pee through them. I figure he`s almost there since he`ll tell us after he`s gone in his traning pants.
