I personally think that teens should be allowed to date at 15 or 16 years old. Of course group outings where others of the opposite sex are there are alright at a much younger age. I just feel that dating should be allowed only for a more mature age. Of course every teen has a different maturity level so it is best for the parents to decide what they feel comfortable with.
i agree with that answer unless if the teen is wanting to go on a date at a younger age i wound go on the date with them yet i would give them privacy but not too much    -    Regina 3/3/2010 10:25:02 AM | Flag

I agree - especially where eighth grade dances now usually allow kids to have dates.    -    mamasin56 3/10/2010 9:56:18 PM | Flag
Quite the conundrum, watching your daughter wave goodbye as she happily strolls arm in arm down the street with her beau. Did you do the right thing? Is she old enough, wise enough? No matter what age you decide to cut her loose the worry of whether or not you made the right decision will play across your mind, creating anxiety and worry for her safety and your sanity until she returns home safe and sound. It is hard to put a definite age on when your daughter will be ready to date. Many factors come into play, her ability to carry herself in a responsible manner, is she easily led, does she have behavioral problems, issues with authority. Have you educated her on sexual contact and the problems it can cause, pregnancy, venereal disease. Does she understand the dangers of drinking or doing drugs. All these issues are important in deciding if and when she is ready to make that big step. Once you grant her the privilege there will be no going back, so it's best to make the right decision for her and yourself. However, any child under the age of 15 does not have the maturity needed to make critical decisions and so I would not recommend allowing a child of a lesser age to date under any circumstances.    -    walkinturtle 4/12/2010 1:56:20 AM | Flag
I agree, however I also think that it depends a lot on your daughter and the relationship you have with her. Is she mature for her age, does she think ahead and give you reason to rust her? Or is she immature and always telling half truths? Her behavior should be a bigger factor then age.    -    smcharlton 4/13/2010 12:30:41 PM | Flag

I'm not going to let my daughter date one-on-one until 18.
That's what my husband said. Your daughter must be daddy's little girl too. ;)    -    Mimi 3/3/2010 8:08:22 PM | Flag
I think that by saying your daughter won't be allowed to date until 18 is unrealistic. You're essentially telling her that she cannot date until she graduates high school which means she won't have a date at prom? She won't be able to go to a movie with a boy who think she's funny? I know that you're concerned with what every mother is concerned with when it comes to teenage boys. However, I think that many times when you're too strict about the dating rules, kids find a way to get what they want. Perhaps only allow group outings to the movies or dinner dates at home? If you give her the freedom to date but set reasonable terms, she will respect you for it and be much more open to communicate about what's going on in her life.    -    easilyamused17 4/11/2010 3:58:42 PM | Flag

Teenage girls should be allowed to go out in groups and they should be so busy they should not be worrying about dating so 17-19 is ok

Before they start sneaking around dating behind your back.

Seriously, it probably depends on how mature the girl is, how mature the boy she wants to date is and what the custom is in the area where you reside.

I know it sounds young but 16 sounds to me like a good time to allow group dates or double dating and if that goes well it's probably time to loosen up and let her know you trust her judgement.  Meeting the boy first is encouraged.  Perhaps letting her invite the special boy over to watch a movie at your house or to attend a weekend barbeque would be a good first date.

When my boys were growing up I always made sure that their friends, both male and female knew they were welcome in our house which made dating unnecessary.  They had a warm safe place to go and parental supervision.  The cost was low -some snacks, some cold drinks, a movie rental and the return (for me) was high.  I knew who they were dating and where they were.

Making them wait until they are 18 or 19 sounds unreasonable as most girls want to attend prom and prom takes place when they are younger than that.

I have a 13 & 14 year old....neither are allowed to date till they are 16.  However, at 15 they will be allowed to go on group dates with either myself or another parent there to supervise.  My oldest will say she has a boyfriend, but I've told her - you don't have a boyfriend till he can take you on a date....until then they are just boys you like.  LOL!
I think this is very reasonable usually younger than 16 all your worried about is if the guy you like looked at you most kids that age are shy and awkward about being around the opposite sex. Remember the age when you thought because a guy sat next to you in class he was your boyfriend. I wonder sometimes is it easier when you don't know anything about boys or when you know everything about boys.    -    anj810 3/23/2010 6:10:44 AM | Flag

I think that girls can start to enter the dating world in a group situation between 15 and 16 depending on the girls particular maturity level. Girls these days are 15 going on 21 . I am seeing them loaded with make up, wearing ridiculous clothes that are totally inappropriate for their age and behaving in manners that are quite honestly alarming.

Teenage pregnancy is at an all time high so I think we need to really focus on what our girls are doing and who they are haning out with before we allow them to date. Dating brings on situations that call for very mature actions. Each girl is different. I think that what ever age we decide to allow them to date, we need to really be involved in knowing where they are and who exactly they are with.

This is a personal subject for me. At the age of 15 I started dating, thought I found the man of my dreams. Instead of going off to a University with all my friends I decieded to buy a house with my boyfriend and go to the local college.

Now that I have my own daughter I am going to let her know that academics and school activities will come first! Boys are going to come and go but her education wont.

I guess I am going to be worlds meanest mom but she will be my friend in the end.

The purpose behind dating is not actually just to hang out and have a boyfriend like I thought when I was a teenager.  It just gets you into trouble to be honest.   I went behind my dad's back, dated anyway, and ended up pregnant eventually.  I think instead of focusing on when to date, it's more important to focus on WHY to date.  The point of dating is to find a future spouse.  If you cannot see yourself marrying the person you are dating, or you are not interested in marriage at that time in your life, dating is useless.  Just like all things in life, dating has a purpose.

I honestly feel that 15 is an appropriate age to date. I wouldn't go much younger because they will not be mature enough yet to do this.  Much older and their friends will already be dating.  If you wait too long, this could cause them to rebel a bit and try to do it behind your back.
