How do I get through to my pregnant sister to stop smoking?

My sister is still smoking while she is pregnant and it's driving me insane. She knows better but says she is uptight and the pregnancy wasn't planned, blah, blah, blah.  I tell her it concerns me and it could make the baby have a lower birth rate.  She still does it.  Is there any other way to get through to her?  I don't even like to be around her right now and it's making me angry. What would you do?

Honestly, I'd mind my own business.  Unless your sister is truly unaware of the risks she's taking (and I find that hard to believe in this day and age) she's likely very unhappy with herself already and putting still more stress on her isn't going to help her quit smoking.  You've made your concerns known and hopefully offered to do things which would help her cope and make her less uptight and maybe just backing off and letting her know you love and support her would be the best thing possible right now.
I agree. You can never change someone, only they can change themselves. Your heart is in the right place, but your fretting will only harm you....and your relationship with your sister. Put yourself in her place for a moment....how would you react to someone bent on making you comply with HER wishes?    -    MomOfFive 3/8/2010 8:34:01 PM | Flag
I agree with the fact that someone can not be pressured into quitting but she certainly needs to put her babies needs before her own . I think she is being selfish. She is responsible for another life now beyond her own. Let her know that you only are concerned because you know how extremely dangerous smoke is to an unborn baby and you already love your niece or nephew very much and only want them to be born healthy.    -    momhas2js 3/10/2010 5:51:37 PM | Flag
be careful too though, depending on how far along she is the stress you can go through by quiting smoking could also put unneeded stress on the baby that could cause more harm than the smoking itself...    -    danismom 3/10/2010 6:52:47 PM | Flag
I agree. The more you harp on it, the more she will smoke.    -    mamasin56 3/10/2010 9:51:43 PM | Flag
It's hard to sit around and watch someone do that to their self but what can you do? She doesn't want to quit don't force it she will realize in time that what she is doing is not only harming her but her unborn child as well.    -    sfrederick1 3/19/2010 10:58:56 PM | Flag

You can explain and try to cajole, but there is only so much that you can do. You have tried, but she has to make her own decisions, and deal with the consequences of them. I would keep her future little one in my thoughts and pray that she sees the light and quits.
