Do you force meal times and eating?

If my kids refuse to eat, should I force it? I don't want to like, encourage obesity or eating more than they need, but they can't live on nothing!

what i end up doing, because i don't want to force the food thing, i end up making a deal when dani decides she is full after eating 2 peas...i let her choose one thing on her plate to finish and then we agree on one or two bites of everything else. that way i know she is not over eating or starving at the same time....
We do the same, plus sometimes they are just being stubborn and won't taste something that they end up loving.    -    aredfern 3/11/2010 12:00:49 AM | Flag
We do a lot of that too, it makes dinner time less of a battle for all of us, and my daughter even sometimes finds a food she likes that she didn't want to try.    -    Mom4one 3/13/2010 12:21:36 AM | Flag

My 3 year old is a good eater so I don't have this problem with her but my 2 year old is very picky. I compromise with her and she has to eat all of one thing on her plate .. I really encourage her to eat her veggies and/or fruits.

As long as your kids are reaching all of their milestones physically and mentally I wouldn't worry too much just do your best to get them to eat a little and when they are hungry they'll eat.

I feed them at meal times. I have a particularly demanding little girl, so I can be a bit harsh at times. If they choose not to eat, they must learn to live with the consequences. If they are just not eating, however, I may require two bites of everything.

If any of our children don't want to eat at meal time we will allow them to save it for later. They know that they cannot have a snack of any sort until they have eaten their dinner. At least with our kids it seems when they don't want to eat it was because they wanted to go do something else, now if they don't want to eat they don't have to, but they must stay at the table with the rest of the family.
